Milan Apartment

Milan, Italy

Perched in an 1890s building overlooking Milan’s historic Sforzesco Castle and the lush Parco Sempione, Eric Egan’s apartment embodies the sophistication and comfort of a luxury hotel suite. Drawing from his extensive experience designing some of the world’s most beautiful hospitality spaces—from the Mandarin Oriental in Lake Como to the Hotel Cipriani in Venice—Egan envisioned his Milan home as a refined yet intimate retreat.

Spanning 1,000 square feet, the apartment originally featured an impractical layout, with a vast foyer and living area dwarfing the more modest kitchen and single bedroom. After living in the space for over a decade, Egan undertook a major renovation in 2020, enhancing its proportions while preserving its grandeur. The result is a residence that balances opulent detailing with a sense of ease, much like the hotels he designs.

A Chicago native who has called Milan home since 1990, Egan brings a deep appreciation for craftsmanship to every project, and his own residence is no exception. The interiors showcase his signature attention to detail—hand-embroidered textiles, intricate moldings, and luxurious passementerie sourced from esteemed European artisans such as Houlès and master framer Giovanni Baccani. Designed for personal indulgence rather than entertaining, the apartment is a true reflection of Egan’s aesthetic: timeless, elegant, and deeply personal.
